May 21, 2004 Thank you for writing to share your thoughts on House Bill 5029. The success of our democracy is built on the idea that citizens take an active role and engage their elected officials. As you know, House Bill 5029 seeks to amend the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act to include the mourning dove on the list of game animals in Michigan. Additionally, the bill would delete a provision that provides that only the legislature may designate a species as game. Currently, this bill is awaiting concurrence within the Michigan House of Representatives. There is little question that House Bill 5029 is a hotly-debated issue in our state and a decision about his legislation will not be easy. Let me assure you that my decision on House Bill 5029 will be made with diligent attention to detail and full consideration will be given to the opinions of all parities involved. As I strive for excellence in government, citizen input and interaction is vitally important to my administration. I appreciate that you have taken the time to contact my office. If you would like more information about this, or any other state legislation, or you would like to monitor its status or progress, you may want to visit the Michigan Legislative web-site at: http://www.michiganlegislature.org. Again, thank you for contacting my office. The diverse opinions and ideas of the people of Michigan make our state strong and give us a solid foundation upon which to build. By actively participating in your state government, not only are you proof that our democracy is thriving, you are helping to move Michigan forward. Sincerely yours, Jennifer M. Granholm ONE SPC CONCERN is with "my decision on House Bill 5029 will be made with diligent attention to detail." Unless the legislative authority of "only the legislature may designate a species a game" has been recently bartered away behind closed doors, that provision was not part of the bill as it passed the House and Senate. With that, just how much attention has the Governor actually given to the details and citizen input on this issue...other than to consider a proposal by the MUCC over the interests of the majority of Michigan citizens?
