Our elected
officials cannot solve many of the problems that face
Michiganians, but they can serve dove shooting
proponents with lightening speed - per their "special"
request.
Mourning doves, like many other native songbirds, can
see color and quickly learn to avoid humans when
targeted. To compensate for this instinctive survival
behavior, shooters traditionally "hide" in complete
camouflage along flight paths to bring down the
unsuspecting quarry as they fly to watering or roosting
sites. To serve dove hunters on the controversial first
opening day of dove season, a subsection was added last
minute to HB 5876 - and then buried in the 100 page
"environmental protection" bill. The new exemption for
dove hunters - they don't have to wear hunter orange.
This amendment was kept very quiet and added just one
day prior to it being sent to Granholm's desk, who
promised she would sign it to serve her new "friends"
who want to use our official bird of peace for target
practice. Apparently, the Governor does keep "some"
promises. The bill was signed at exactly 5pm on
September 9th by Governor Jennifer M. Granholm so it
would not have to be recorded to the general public
until after 9am on the 10th - opening day.
