Dove Shooting Referendum Makes 2006 Ballot

Great news for doves in Michigan! The Committee to Restore the Dove Shooting Ban collected more than 275,000 petition signatures to place a referendum on dove shooting on the November 2006 ballot.  This means that the dove hunting law signed by Governor Jennifer Granholm in 2004 will be automatically suspended, stopping dove hunts in 2005 and 2006 until Michigan voters have the chance to decide the fate of mourning doves in their state.

"This is good news not only for the doves but also for protected species of birds who share the skies and fields during the fall shooting season," says James Bull, Ph.D., former president of the Detroit Audubon Society. "Because hunters often have difficulty determining which bird is their target, others such as the American kestrel or sharp-shinned hawk are mistakenly shot."

Educating Michigan voters is the next crucial step in the campaign to restore legal protections to the state's official Bird of Peace. Donations for TV and print ads, posters and more are crucial to keeping this campaign vital and making it a success.  Click here to make a donation.

To all the volunteers who worked so hard to collect the required signatures, thank you!
