MAS Joins Conservation and Humane Groups
to Launch Signature-Gathering Campaign

When House Bill 5029 was signed in June of this year that allows the recreational shooting of mourning doves for the first tine in our state's history, we felt bewildered and betrayed. The governor had broken her promise to us and to voters. However, we who have fought long and hard against this bill, have maintained our strength and are now prepared to press on and let the voters of Michigan make the final decision!

On August 5, Michigan Audubon Society reaffirmed its stand on the banning of dove hunting in Michigan, by being one of ten charter coalition organizations represented at a press conference held in Lansing. The Coalition To Restore the Dove Shooting Ban intends to gather the 158, 000 valid signatures required to put a dove hunt referendum on the 2006 ballot to reverse this law passed earlier. These signatures must be collected by March of '05.

The time is now to volunteer and do all you can to help this noble effort. MAS members, chapters and affiliates can be major role players in helping to achieve this goal. We can help restore the protection of Michigan's Official Bird of Peace. If you would like to help collect signatures please contact The Committee To Restore the Dove Shooting Ban at 517-321-DOVE or www.StopShootingDoves.org.
