Excerpt from Detroit News on Mourning Doves Published November 6, 2004. Detroit
News. Excerpt. Dear Dr. Fox: I read in the paper about the hunting season being open for mourning doves and that one presidential candidate is an "avid hunter" and actually enjoys shooting at and killing these little birds. What is your opinion on this, and does such poorly regulated killing help the "balance of nature" as some advocates claim? - T.U., Washington, D.C. Dear T.U.: I despise such "sport" as a reflection of the dark side of human nature. Most rationalizations that justify killing (even of our own kind) are almost invariably self-serving. Mourning dove shooters are an abomination, killing not for food but for the "challenge." Manhood and humanity should be measured by the yardstick of compassion, not by how many kills are bagged. To paraphrase American writer
Henry David Thoreau, every man goes through an embryonic stage
in which he is a hunter before he matures and sets aside his
gun. |
